Snow? Make snow ice cream.

February 13, 2021 by addisonbrae

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is AB_stripes_sml_3C-300x20.jpg

Temperatures are freezing almost everywhere with winter storms Shirley, Tabitha, and now Uri. If you have fresh snow, make ice cream! I learned a couple of years ago when I asked friends who live or grew up in the Midwest if they made snow ice cream when they were kids. Their response? “What’s snow ice cream?”

Snow ice cream is too amazing for anyone to miss out on, so here is my super simple recipe. There are fancier recipes on the web, but I suggest keeping it easy so you have time to bundle up and play in the snow. Then come in and enjoy a bowl of snow ice cream and a juicy novel in front of the fireplace.

Snow Ice Cream
1 cup milk
½ cup sugar
½ to 1 teaspoon vanilla
For chocolate ice cream add about ¼ cup chocolate syrup
About 8 cups fresh, clean snow
Mix all ingredients except for snow. Pour mixture over snow and stir gently until blended. Serve and enjoy.

In east Texas where I grew up, we got one or two inches of snow once or twice each winter, if we were lucky. When it snowed, schools were almost always closed until temperatures rose above freezing. We bundled up and made snowmen and snow angels, sledded down hilly streets, and always made snow ice cream.

There’s 100% chance of snow in Dallas on Valentine’s Day, and I’m making ice cream. For old time’s sake.

While mixing it up, the ice cream looks a little like mashed potatoes.
It’s sweet, creamy and delicious, especially with a little chocolate syrup.
UPDATE! Fresh snow, vanilla and milk is all it takes.

#CharacterInterview: Jim Borden, the hero from Arresting Jeremiah

    October 26, 2020 by addisonbrae

    Arresting Jeremiah

How would you describe yourself in a personal ad? Hmm…sandy-brown hair, dark eyes, tall, built, and not available. Sorry, ladies. This train already has a conductor, and she will strike you down if you try to take a ride.

What would you change about your life if you could? I’ve made some bad mistakes for good reasons, or at least I thought they were good reasons at the time. What did I do, you might ask? Well, I almost got one of my parolees killed, and now he’s stuck in a crappy situation. Too bad the foolish kid doesn’t realize it. He’s having a blast working for the wealthiest crime lord in the city, and I’m biting my tongue, looking the other way.

What are your thoughts on love? It’s not worth it.  Too complicated. Too dangerous. Then I met Calista and everything changed. She’s a wonderful, sassy, kindhearted woman who drops me to my knees. Hell yes, I can admit that. I have no shame in telling everyone that she has me wrapped around her little finger. I love her so much I can barely breathe sometimes.

What have you always wanted to do but haven’t? And why? Follow my own dreams. When I was a little boy, my parents—especially Dad—pushed me to strive for a career I didn’t want. To make them proud, I became a parole officer with the intention of joining the police force later on. The job drained me, turned me into a prick. I needed a major change. Once Calista and I got together, her dream to open a bakery made sense to me. So maybe it’s not my own personal dream, but stuffing doughnuts with blueberry filling is a better way to spend my time than dealing with parolees shooting at me.

What’s your favorite article of clothing in your closet and why? Blazers. I love freaking suit blazers, whether they’re the navy-blue variety, sports jackets, or even the fancy pinstripe kind. It hides the firearm I always keep holstered at my waist, and it’s just stylish. Sue me.

    Blurb

    Amber Daulton

Injured Parole Officer Jeremiah “Jim” Borden never expected Calista Barlow, the sassy blonde waitress he’s craved for months, to ring his doorbell. She slips into his heart—and his bed—but he’s obsessed with a gangland investigation that threatens his career and maybe even his life.

Calista doesn’t trust easily, not with a daughter to protect and the stalker who keeps calling her. After her violent ex-boyfriend returns, she finds solace in Jim’s arms. Jim may have to forego his need for answers to protect the ready-made family he adores, but how will he and Calista escape an unseen enemy that is always one step ahead of them? Watch the trailer. Purchase Arresting Jeremiah on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Apple, or Universal link.

    Would you dare or double-dare?

    June 26, 2020 by addisonbrae

My sincere thanks to Addison for sharing her blog space with me today and giving me this opportunity to introduce you to the first book in my new series. Dare to Hope kicks off the Double Dare Romance series, up to a dozen books about dear friends who want to spend more time together. And you know the old cliché about only seeing people at weddings and funerals? These women dare each other to marry so they can see each other at the weddings!

Although the women are in their thirties, most are single, or single again, and so they compete to wed. Once the dare is in place, it provides the impetus for shy girls to act, homebodies to travel, old flames to reignite or, in the case of Dare to Hope, women to follow their hearts instead of their heads.

This series offers everything – first-time love, office romance, second chances, surprise pregnancies, and deep abiding friendships between eight women who just want to spend time together and prod each other to find true love and happiness. And of course, rich, successful, and sexy heroes to steal our hearts and take our breath away.

The first books in this series have been written at a lap desk in my living room, cut off from the world.  Fortunately for me, the inspiration for my ‘crazy eights’ is a group of my own lifelong friends that were always just a phone or  Zoom call away. I have incorporated characteristics from these women into my characters, making these heroines especially near and dear to me. I know you will love them, too.

For a few of the books,  their life stories prompted my plots. In other cases, a love of cooking, passion for theater, or driving need to rescue cats. In Dare to Hope, I was inspired by a true love story of two people who thought their chance at love and family was over until they found each other.

Meet Eliana and Jeremy, the stars of Dare to Hope: A Double Dare Romance. And be sure to check out the contest!

Dare to Hope: A Double Dare Romance (Book One)

The “Crazy Eights,” eight women who have been friends for 30 years, have a powerful connection yet rarely see each other. At a pivotal time in their lives, they create a way to remedy this predicament, an audacious dare contrived to bring them together for weddings – each participant must get married within twelve months. The stakes are high. Win the bet and lose your heart, or lose the bet and perform a personally mortifying task.

In the first of their stories, we meet Eliana, beautiful and brilliant, but starting over, focused on her career, not on some foolhardy dare. Longing for a family but recently divorced and on her own, Eliana sets her sights on a new job, a new home, and accepting her single, childless status. Independent and determined, she has no idea that in less than six months she will both win and lose her heart’s desire.

Jeremy Klein, genius engineer and inventor, is also making life changes. He’s sold his startup to a major medical device company, becoming President and CEO, and a billionaire before he is forty. Although he’s gun-shy about the dating game, Jeremy knows it’s time to apply his smarts, sex appeal and new-found success to finding true love.

When Eliana meets Jeremy, they bond quickly. The couple has so much in common and chemistry that sizzles. Winning Eliana feels like a fantasy come true to Jeremy. Their attraction is immediate and electrifying, and a one-night stand morphs into planning a future. But plans change. On track to wedded bliss, baby and all, Jeremy and Eliana are derailed by accusations that threaten their relationship, Eliana’s career and Jeremy’s future as CEO.

Spies, lies, allegations, and misunderstandings abound, threatening to destroy their happiness. That is, until those “Crazy Eights” get involved, scheming and manipulating to win Eliana her happily ever after. Can a group of determined friends help Eliana and Jeremy hold onto love?

Buy Links: Dare to Hope is available for preorder on B&N, Apple Books, or Kobo until July 9, 2020 (Universal Buy Link). Afterward it will only be available exclusively on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited (Amazon).

A Dare to Hope excerpt: His grin was devastating up close – wide and welcoming, with a hint of naughtiness and the promise of shared pleasures. But it was his eyes, deep coffee brown and fringed with long dark lashes that were his best feature; piercing, intelligent and inquisitive eyes, trained on her.

Please, God, Eliana prayed quickly, do not let this man be the new sales manager. It would be lamentable if she had to keep him at arm’s length. He was the first man Eliana had felt drawn to since Nico. If she was honest with herself, he was the first man she had ever felt this attracted to so immediately. It was enough to make her believe in love at first sight or fate.

“Hi,” he stepped closer, ignoring the empty stool beside her to halt just inside her personal space. Usually, Eliana would have reflexively backed up, but she savored his closeness, the power emanating from his presence. Even in this stuffy bar, he smelled good – fresh, like soap and good whiskey. And up close, his eyes were more magical – a hint of gold dancing in their depths.

“Hi,” she responded on a breath, letting the single word hang there for a moment before adding “You aren’t in sales, are you?”

“Nope.” If he thought it was a strange conversation starter, he kept it to himself. “Engineering and design, although I have dabbled in sales. I could be in sales for you,” he offered in a voice smooth as brandy, redolent with sexual promise and a hint of curiosity. She laughed at his offer. “Are you in sales?”

“Yes, I am. I was thinking of what a crime it would be if you turned out to be my new boss. I’m meeting him tomorrow.”

“Jeremy,” he responded, extending his hand to shake hers. “Not in sales. Is your boss named Jeremy?”

“Thankfully, not.” Eliana extended her hand, savoring the moment as Jeremy wrapped his long fingers around hers. She noticed there was no wedding band as she admired the strength and length of his fingers, the fine hairs on the back of his hand, and his grip – warm and dry. His skin was soft over fine bone and healthy muscle. Everything about him captivated her. “Eliana.”

Jeremy seemed in no hurry to release her hand, but after several beats too long for politeness, Eliana pulled hers from his. “Is this seat taken?” he asked, already sitting down, not thinking twice about it. “Or perhaps that table against the wall? I am anxious to learn why you don’t know who you work with, Eliana.”

Eliana laughed and watched as Jeremy’s breath stopped. His every emotion was transparent, especially the desire flaming in his eyes right now. A passion she reciprocated. Wholeheartedly. She couldn’t remember such an instantaneous attraction. But with Jeremy, she felt electricity and lust move through her entire body, just from the touch of his hand and the sound of her name spoken in his rich baritone.

“Eliana,” he rolled the word around his mouth as if tasting a fine wine. “What a lovely name.” Eliana panties dampened. He was just saying words, but their underlying promise was undeniable. She wanted to be alone with him. She wanted to be naked with him. And all she knew was his first name.

Eliana nodded toward the table, questioning her sanity. She was sure about what this man wanted, but after only minutes, her body governed her head. Jeremy spoke briefly with the bartender, passed him a fifty like it was a single, and motioned for her to lead the way to the empty table. Before they had settled in their chairs, both had fresh drinks. Earlier, the bartender had responded to her beauty with decent service and half-hearted flirting, but he reacted with alacrity to the big tip.

“So, spill,” Jeremy directed, leaning forward on his elbows and putting his mouth dangerously close to hers. Just a few inches, Eliana imagined, and they could be kissing. “I am dying to hear your story. I want to know absolutely everything about you.” The way he lingered on the word ‘everything’ made Eliana wetter still. Oh man, she was in way over her head.

Romantic Suspense and Dark Energy—How They Collide

    June 2, 2020 by addisonbrae

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is AB_stripes_sml_3C-300x20.jpg

Our universe is made of millions of galaxies, but voids exist between them. Cosmologists still debate what causes these voids. Some speculate that concentrations of dark energy pull these galaxies apart creating these voids. Astronomers say as much as 96% of the universe is composed of dark matter and dark energy, which no one has ever directly seen. And they only have theories as to what these dark substances are.

Life has similar mysteries. Have you ever known anyone who always gets bad luck? No matter how nice or how careful they are, these poor souls get the short end. Why? No one knows. The theories of dark energy and dark matter in the cosmos are fitting metaphors for good and bad karma. Dark matter, scientists believe, bring planets and stars together while dark energy pushes them apart and destroys things to create massive voids. Some astronomers believe dark energy will eventually destroy our universe. This is what continues to happen to Gillian, the heroine in Dark Energy, Return to Becker Circle.

Gillian is a smart, badass young woman who never breaks her word. But keeping promises sometimes puts her life in danger. Her boyfriend Jon applied the theory to Gillian in a song he wrote for her called Dark Energy. He says the song symbolizes Gillian as the dark matter that draws people to one another, similar to the way gravity pulls planets, stars, suns, and other matter together in the cosmos. But she’s forced to fight off dark matter.

Do you have people in your life that feel like your dark matter—the ones who connect ideas, create bonds, shape things for the better? Friends who bring you happiness and confidence? It takes as many of your dark matter people to resist dark energy—the empty space that slips into the voids in our lives to disrupt. Some speculate that we attract the good and the bad by our thoughts or actions. I believe karma is much more random. If there is logic to it, why do bad things happen to amazing people?

We can control how we treat others—become their dark matter.

Celebrate National Margarita Day with a Margarita

    February 22, 2020 by addisonbrae

Have a refreshing margarita to celebrate the weekend and National Margarita Day. If you’ve read my romantic suspense, Becker Circle, you know Gillian, the heroine, tends bar part-time in her neighborhood pub. Here are some tasty margarita recipes she might make at home or in the bar, and you don’t have to be a mixologist to make them. So fire up the blender and enjoy!

    Addison’s college frozen Margarita
This recipe was my never-fail mix through my college and early working days. It’s not terribly expensive, is always tasty, and makes enough to share. The cocktail is so smooth it should even appeal to people who are not big margarita fans.

    6 oz frozen limeade mix
6 oz Squirt soda (Squirt is grapefruit-flavored. If unavailable in your area, use lemon-lime Slice or Sprite)
    6 oz tequila (a mid-priced 100% Agave works)
    Ice to fill blender

Pour first three ingredients in a blender. Fill the rest with ice. Blend until smooth when ice is no longer chunky.  Dip glass rims in lime juice and sea salt. Garnish with a lime slice or wedge. Makes about six cocktails.

    Scout’s Pack Leader Margarita

    Margarita on the rocks
    1 1/2 oz tequila (a mid-priced white tequila 100% Agave should work)
1/2 oz triple sec (Grand Marnier orange liqueur)
1 1/2 oz margarita mix (read the label for natural ingredients)
    Juice from 1 lime wedge
Dip the glass rim in lime juice and sea salt. Pour over ice in a low ball glass, garnish with a lime slice and enjoy.

    Scout’s Pack Leader Margarita
    1 oz Cebeza tequila
    1 oz triple sec
    1 oz agave
Hibiscus ice cube (the red one)
Dip the glass rim in lime juice and sea salt/paprika. Pour over ice in a low ball glass, garnish with a lime slice and enjoy.
NOTE: I’m guessing on proportions for this one since restaurants don’t give away trade secrets. Jared made this amazing cocktail for me at Scout at the Statler in Dallas. He suggested trying to sip the drink to allow the hibiscus cube to melt and temper the tartness.

    Cheers to National Margarita Day!

    Prohibition Centennial Celebration Cocktails

    January 17, 2020 by addisonbrae

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is AB_stripes_sml_3C-300x20.jpg

It was 100 years ago on Friday, January 17 when the 18th Amendment, or Volstead Act, outlawed alcohol manufacturing, sales and transportation in the United States. Liquor flowed again on December 13, 1933 with the 21st Amendment. America was never the same. During those 13-plus years of the roaring 20’s, a larger-than-life culture emerged. We still see much of that culture today, which included bootleggers that evolved into NASCAR, the flapper era, organized crime, speakeasies, and many cocktails we still enjoy.

As I’ve learned, bartenders created a new menu of cocktails with tasty ingredients to help hide the bitter taste of the era’s “hooch” gin, bourbon, rum, and other liquor. There were many cocktails created during or popular during Prohibition including the Buck’s Fizz, which a bartender in Paris invented in 1925 and was a popular speakeasy beverage—now a brunch staple known as a mimosa.

These are a few standouts Gillian, the main character in Becker Circle, would have served to celebrate. You’ll see a common theme of bathtub gin, which was easier to get during prohibition.

    Sidecar
    2 oz. Cognac or brandy
1 oz. orange liqueur (Cointreau or Triple Sec)
    ½ oz. Lemon juice
Dip your glass rim in lemon juice and then in sugar to make a yummy sugar rim. Shake ingredients with ice in a shaker, strain into a martini glass.

    Gin Rickey
1-1 ½ oz. dry gin (it was originally a bourbon drink and changed to gin during Prohibition since gin doesn’t require aging)
    ½ oz. fresh lime juice
    Club soda to top
Shake ingredients with ice in a shaker, strain over ice into a highball glass. Add a lime slice to float in drink and on the side.

Southside (legend says it was created in Chicago’s South Side and a favorite of Al Capone)
    2 oz. gin
    1 oz. fresh lemon juice
    5 mint leaves
    1 oz. simple syrup
Gently muddle mint and lemon juice in a shaker. Add remaining ingredients and shake with ice. Strain into chilled martini glass. Add a lemon twist and mint sprig garnish to dress it up.

    Bees Knees
    2 oz. gin
    ¾ oz. fresh lemon juice
½ oz. honey syrup (½ cup honey, ½ cup water heated in saucepan over medium heat)
Shake ingredients with ice in a shaker, strain into a chilled martini glass. Add a lemon twist.

We should never repeat history and pass laws that make daily activities of law-abiding citizens illegal. If we do, American ingenuity will kick in and create a new culture that lives on forever.

Visit during the weekend for photos of these yummy cocktails.

Please don’t drink and drive or drink and dial.
