Clothes often make a character—just like the way we dress can help us feel good about ourselves. Becker Circle’s first line starts with Gillian heading to her first night bartending, her second job.
I peek back at my butt in these loose-fitting jeans and all I see is sad. She asks a stylish neighbor to help her pick out new clothes. She’s trying for a fresh start, and she likes the results—at first.
All it takes is a haircut and new clothes for a three-hundred buck tip night? Until someone comments on her new look.
I’d rather crawl under the bar rather than believe someone really thinks I’m pretty. Some of you will understand how Gillian feels. I’ve certainly had those moments.
I truly enjoy and respect clothes and their potential to help complete a personality. They don’t have to be expensive, a trendy label, or brand new. They just need to fit well and make the person wearing them feel amazing.
When midseason hits, I get tired of my clothes. I walk in my closet and see a stale summer wardrobe. I’m probably the only one who notices, but I’m the one who has to wear them.
I know I’m not alone. A friend recently hosted a Clothes & Cocktails party as a remedy. We gathered at her house on a Saturday while the guys went out for, you know, guy things. We covered her living room with fruit and bagels, fancy drinks, and clothes. Lots of clothes. There had to have been 200 tops, dresses, skirts, jeans, purses, and other accessories, and the 8 of us tried on each other’s clothes like we were at Neiman Marcus. We shared honest opinions like friends, not mothers.
All of us went home with fresh outfits. And the clothes I don’t love anymore have new homes.
I’m the proud owner of a cute linen skirt, flowy emerald green shirt, fun summer top, two designer jeans (in my size except for the extra four inches even my heels won’t make up for), a sparkly sweater dress for winter, and a dress that my fingers are crossed a friend will like. This week, I already wore Penny- and Kaila-me-downs. Each of us spent a total of $0.00 on our wardrobe refreshes, and we had a blast in the process. We had so much fun there’s another Clothes & Cocktails planned for fall, and Gillian may have a similar experience in the next book.
I’d love to hear your fun clothes-swapping stories! Please post stories and pics, or message me on Twitter, Facebook or on my website if you’re willing to share.
Clothes deserve a second chance, too.
